Persuasive Techniques in Advertising

Gender Representation

Advertising varies depending on the target audience. It usually varies because of men and women’s different interests. Here are a few examples of how things would be advertised to the two genders.

A Sports car:
Men: There could be a successful, arrogant looking man inside the car – with half naked young girls around him, laughing and smiling.
Women: There could be a sophisticated woman driving the car, and the car would also depend on the colour and felinity.

Bottled Beer:
Men: A group of men in a living room, watching a game of football whilst drinking the advertised beer – looking very happy and enthusiastic.
Women: A woman on a beach with some of her friends, sunbathing and giggling with them too – whilst laying back on her beach chair.

Toilet paper:
Men: Maybe a cheap set of toilet rolls, with a woman in a bikini on the packaging – and a competition entry if you buy the product.
Women: A clean, cosy environment, giving off a sense of relaxation and comfort.

Deodorant:
Men: A man could be applying the deodorant to himself, and plenty of women would start running towards him. This would give off a feeling of confidence.
Women: A woman could be applying the deodorant to herself, and then suddenly be surrounded by a tropical forest with lots of birds and sunshine. This would give off a feeling of being natural.

Cigarettes:
Men: A man would be smoking the advertised cigarette, and have women surrounding him, reaching for his cigarette box and touching him. This gives off a sense of pride and attraction.
Women: A woman and her friends could be sitting around a table, laughing and smiling whilst sharing a cigarette around. This gives off a sense of happiness and sociality.

An iPod:
This object is quite unisex and could appeal to both sexes at the same time – although the colours could vary, making it appeal more to one sex than the other.
